New Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) to target the skills Australia needs

Introducing Australia’s New Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)

The Australian Government has unveiled a significant update to the temporary skilled visa program with the release of the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) today.

This newly introduced CSOL replaces outdated and overly complex occupation lists, streamlining pathways for skilled migration. It is a consolidated, flexible list designed to meet Australia's current labour market needs. Developed with input from Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) and backed by thorough labour market analysis and stakeholder consultations, the CSOL includes 456 occupations eligible for temporary skilled migration.

What Does This Mean for Skilled Migrants?

The CSOL will underpin the Core Skills stream of the new Skills in Demand visa, which is set to replace the Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) visa on 7 December 2024.

Additionally, it will apply to the Direct Entry stream of the permanent Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa. This marks a major improvement in accessibility and clarity for businesses and skilled migrants alike, ensuring Australia attracts and retains the talent needed to support its economic growth.

More Changes to Come

The introduction of the CSOL is just the beginning. Further reforms, including the Skills in Demand visa and the National Innovation visa, are expected to be announced shortly, ushering in a new era for Australia’s immigration system.
